| Name: | Robert Muldoon [Jurassic Park - Novel] |
|---|---|
| Birthdate: | 08-07 |
Character Name: Robert Muldoon
Fandom: Jurassic Park (Novel); Novel for most his characterization and history, but movie for some ideas of speech inflection + an image of what he looks like which folks will recognize. (He's much more badass in the book.)
Age: 50.
Species: Human.
Gender: Male.
Sexual Orientation (if applicable): Not canonly stated. Probably presumed heterosexual. Seems more whiskey-and-gun-sexual.
Physical Appearance: "Robert Muldoon was a big man, fifty years old, with a steel-grey mustache and deep blue eyes."
FIlm Appearance (Joseph Mazzello, Actor):

Personality and Traits:
Muldoon, for the sake of this game, will be mostly characterized by his book self, while incorporating some of his more serious side as shown in the film.
Muldoon, artfully described as having an "unblinking view of animals -- an unromantic view" finds some of the dinosaurs as too dangerous to be kept in a park setting. His understanding of the prey to predator population, and the dynamics of predators and prey animals is almost innate. Years of working in the field inure him to some of the grisly aspects; he doesn't expect to find much at the scene of an attack, but can read the signs left in order to determine what has occurred. (For example, he figured Regis's leg was torn off rather than bitten through based on the tears and the visible joint - he also can determine this was caused by the T-Rex based on general strength and size needed for such an attack.) He can track and read tracks, even in situations that seem nonsensical or next-to impossible -- in heavy mud, he found the tracks for all the living people as well as tracks for the much larger animals.
His view on nature is unblinking and realistic (as stated above) but this does tend to leak over into how he handles people. He jokes, in a caustic way, and doesn't hem and haw about making the unpleasant but necessary decisions. He is cautious, believes in the ability of animals to do what is in their nature, and well-versed in the use of guns, various explosives and grenades, and tranquilizers. He also is a bit of a handy-man with fences and general maintenance around the park or parks in general, but knows nothing about the operating of computers.
He keeps others informed of what he is going to do or what needs to be done, is overly fond of whiskey (to a degree which is probably alcoholic, or had been previously) and is prone to being misogynistic when in his cups.
Muldoon is survival-savvy, almost distressingly calm in the direct face of carnage, and prone to cursing in the face of disaster. He has a healthy fear of what the animals can do - particularly of the raptors, which are far too intelligent, small, and agile for his tastes. Muldoon also doesn't have much tolerance for Stupid People, opting to ignore them when they are being Particularly Stupid, or to shout at them when they're being Ridiculously Stupid.
He can drive well, predict speed of a four-wheel-drive on rocky terrain in relation to the speed of being chomped well, and lean against back walls with his arms folded across his chest well.
Canon Background:
First, a link to a good summation of at least his movie background:
http://jurassicpark.wikia.com/wiki/Robert_Muldoon
As he's not going to be from movie canon, as I later realized, this is mostly for reference and as a point of interest.
Now, for words about his book-canon background (at times paraphrased from the book itself, with notices of such):
Muldoon was raised in Kenya, spending most of his life as a guide for African big-game hunters (much as his father before him). Starting seven years ago, he worked primarily for conservation groups and zoo designers as a wildlife consultant. He had become well known enough to have magazine articles written about how fantastic he was at what he did. "What Robert Trent Jones is to golf courses, Robert Muldoon is to zoos: a designer of unsurpassed knowledge and skill" (Jurassic Park, p. 145).
In 1986 (which is about a year, two years ago, so when he was 48) Muldoon had worked for a San Francisco company building a private wildlife park on an island in North America. "Muldoon had laid out the boundaries for different animals, defining space and habitat requirements for lions, elephants, zebras, and hippos. Identifying which animals could be together, and which had to be separated" (Jurassic Park, p. 145-146). He wasn't terribly interested in this work, when he was offered a job at Jurassic Park as game warden. This was about when he wanted to leave Africa anyway, and with the salary being excellent, Muldoon had taken the project on for a year. He was not prepared for the park to be a real collection of genetically engineered prehistoric animals, and while it was interesting, it was to a degree frightening for how much was completely unknown about these animals.
Skipping forward to the events which would "end" the Isla Nublar, Muldoon was in residence when the guests arrived. He kept to the background largely, preparing the jeep for a quick retrieval mission with a rocket launcher (the man was prepared) while the guests were out on tour. Then life got interesting. With the power down, the animals breaking fences, and the other gas-powered Jeep missing (the rest a mile away in a different building) he had waited for the dinosaur veterinarian to return, then taken the Jeep out to retrieve the stranded passengers. He was able to track them in the mud, finding only one person obviously dead (the torn off leg gave it away, really) and locating the badly injured Malcom in the process. Due to the constraints of Malcom's condition, they drove back to the visitor's center and hotel.
The night was long, but they pulled through, getting power back on. Too bad it was simply auxiliary power - but that wouldn't matter yet. Muldoon was out and about fixing fences in the early morning, wary and keeping his mind on what the animals of the park would be doing, and where they would likely be located. He and the vet were in charge of getting animals back to their correct pens; and Muldoon ultimately had to track the adult T-Rex. This turned out to be an event; first the T-Rex didn't show on the motion detectors, and when she finally did, he had the time for about two shots before she charged and made further attempts possible. That, and he had no more gigantic tranqs left to shoot her with.
Turned out one of his shots did hit, and it took an hour for the T-Rex to go under. She was left sitting in a pool of water at the base of a waterfall, and was going to be relocated before Disaster Struck Again. Horror among horrors, or stupidities among stupidities, the group learned two things: they'd been running on auxiliary power, which was almost out, and the fences had never turned back on.
So begins the adventure of the power reset. In attempting to escort the lead engineer out of the center to the maintenance area, Muldoon and another employee encounter the velociraptors which had escaped from their holding area. Convinced he was ten seconds away from death, Muldoon ran -- and managed to stuff himself into meter-pipers at the backside of the visitor's center, suffering a twisted ankle and nothing more. He shot the leg off a raptor, and after some time was able to get back inside the fortified structure, which was unfortunately not fortified enough to hold off intelligent, natural hunters who had the biting power of a crocodile.
He and Elle Sattler managed to distract the main body of velociraptors while Dr. Grant was sent over to finish the engineer's work, as the engineer hadn't returned or been in radio contact. Elle was running marathons with the raptors when Wu came out to warn her and Muldoon the raptors eating through the window were gone. Wu was promptly disemboweled by the ridiculously fast creatures, and Muldoon shut the door while Elle vaulted the roof. Muldoon decided he was not drunk enough for all of this, though he didn't do much about this issue.
Power was re-established, and ultimately Muldoon left the island with the other survivors... to be detained for an unknown amount of time in San Jose, of Costa Rica.
Strengths/Abilities: He knows big-game, can track a variety of animals (human included), knows the attack patterns of a certain number of dinosaurs, and other things which escape me now but should at least be in the personality/traits area. He has a hat, fairly awesome vision, and the ability to think fast. (Come on, stuffing himself in a pipe to avoid raptor death? Fast acting!)
Weaknesses/Faults: He's perfect, except for, you know, latent alcoholism, misogyny, being over the age of the most perfectly fit age for human beings, and likely to believe the worst in order to, you know, be a realist. He curses like ... an English-American man from Africa. Bloody fucking hell!
